Classic Speedster JourneysYour Speedster is your ticket to ride. Despite stating the obvious, it's something that is so much more than just a vehicle for contemporary roads and highways. With a classic car you're able to relive classic journeys in the history of motorsport and automobile innovation. Cast your mind back to the glory days of old, though if they pre-date your era then a little imagination will of course be required! Conjure up an image of the golden era of rally racing, of the inauguration and early years of the 24 hours of Le Mans (24 Heures du Mans), the Thousand Miles (Mille Miglia) or the Targa Florio. The pinnacle of endurance racing in France and Italy in the early twentieth century, these races are held in fond nostalgia and the tracks revisited by racing enthusiasts. While the 24 Heures du Mans continues to be held into the modern era, the Mille Miglia exists instead as a parade for pre-1957 cars that stretches for several days of celebration. First stop, London hotels; next stop, the Continent? Where will your next Speedster tour take you? For some, the allure of rally racing has taken them further afield to the open roads of the Americas. The 1000km Buenos Aires was an interesting racing fixture of the 1950s that returned briefly to the international stage in the early 1970s. Porsche 356s, either close to stock models or highly modified, have performed well in this event, as well as La Carrera Panamericana. The latter event, considered by contemporaries to be the most dangerous race in the world, was run in Mexico during the early 1950s before cancellation due to safety concerns. Gone but not forgotten, the race was revived as a classic road rally in 1988. Combine this with the open-top Speedster designs so popular in Southern California from the outset, and a stay in a San Francisco hotel, and you're one step closer to living the ultimate Speedster dream! |
