This elegant 384 page book by Karl Ludvigsen features more than 500 evocative photos by Rodolfo Mailander. It covers the period 1950 to 1955 with chapters for each year.

Because of the time frame, it will be of more interest to 550 Spyder enthusiasts than people only interested in the history of the 356 Speedster although there are some interesting insights into the genesis of the Speedster look with the 'chopped-top' 356 coupes entered at Le Mans in June 1953. The launch of the Speedster at the March 1955 Geneva Salon is covered in detail.

With his Leica, Mailander captured the amazing early success of Porsche on the circuits of Le Mans, Monte Carlo, Monza, Bern, Reims and the salons of Paris, Geneva, Turin and Frankfurt.

More importantly, the book gives an insight to the people involved in Porsches rapid progress in the racing world. There are superb images from the race tracks and the factory, many of which have never been published before.

The evolution and success of the Type 550 sports-racing Spyders from 1953 is covered in great detail. Every race and every car is detailed together with the famous drivers including Helm Glockler and Hans Hermann.

The streamlined, enclosed 550s designed to reduce drag on the Mulsanne staight are also covered in detail - with Paul Frere and Richard von Frankenberg winning the 1,500cc class at Le Mans in 1953.

The book covers all the Le Mans races in the period as well as the Mille Miglia and many other important racing events.

There is so much new information of interest to early Porsche enthusiasts in this book and so many photographs that have never been published before.

It provides a unique and satisfying record of the Porsche marque during this fascinating 6 year period as well as being a beautifully produced work of art.
