National Kit Car Show,
Stoneleigh Park, 2006 A truly excellent Stoneleigh Park this year, with record numbers of Club cars showing up! (More than 30 on Sunday, 20+ on Monday). Well over twenty people stayed at the Old Mill at Baginton overnight (including the Dutch contingent), with others camping at the showground. A wide variety of Speedsters and Spyders were on display and the judges (led by Steve Hole of Total Kit Car) awarded the Best in Show this year to Simon Hambly's stunning black Chesil, entirely built by himself and with many outstanding features. Highly Commended was the yellow Speedster of Jacob from the Dutch Club with its simple, uncomplicated period detail. It was almost invidious, however, to choose the best cars, as so many (just about all!) were outstanding, especially all the four from the Netherlands Inside the halls, Speedon (Mart Boudestein and co. from the Netherlands) made a tremendous impact with their red Speedster, black Roadster and Kubelwagen (complete with spade in holder positioned in front of driver's side door!) Many thanks to them for the interest they showed in the Club and for enjoying a few beers with the crowd at the Old Mill! Rob Lindsay also showed off his Spyder and Pilgrim were present with a Speedster and other cars (but no 4-seater stretched version this year!) Chesil, unfortunately, were not represented, but one of their cars was with us on the Club site for viewing by the large number of visitors to the Club this year. Udo made the journey from Germany, as usual, this time in his latest creation, a 356 Coupe which he made entirely from scratch, borrowing a friend's original and taking his own mould for the body! For anyone who had half a day to hear the full story, Udo's description of the process involved was absolutely fascinating! Two unexpected visitors were one of the Martin and Walker 356 Coupes (only 3 were ever made) - a fabulous car (and for sale!!) and a PGO Speedster owned by a Frenchhman who came over from the Club Automobile Martine site, where he was with a variety of other cars over from France for the show. Even the weather was relatively kind to us. The forecast had been decidedly "iffy", but apart from one or two very short showers, the weather did not have any adverse impact on our enjoyment. Well done, everyone - a great show! (Special thanks as usual to Vernon and Yvonne for the huge amount of work they put in to make this event a success). On this basis, Castle Combe should be something we can really look forward to - Chesil will definitely be there and we are expecting up to 20 Club cars there as well. For anyone wanting to join Len Raynsford, myself and several others in a cruise down there, we will be meeting at the Membury Services on the M4 at 7.45am (Saturday, 17 June) |
