Stonor Park, 3rd June 2007 If Stoneleigh Park in May was slightly disappointing in comparison with recent years (poor weather, less cars than usual, etc), then Stonor Park more than made up for it! This is primarily a VW Aircooled event that, until a few years ago, I attended on my own, before publicising it to Club members. Each year, more of us have turned up, until this year there were no less than 10 Speedsters and Spyders present, plus two Club members in "other cars" on account of their Speedsters awaiting SVA or suffering from mechanical problems. As a complete contrast to Stoneleigh Park a month before (or the appalling weather all over England the previous week!) Stonor basked all day in solid, red-hot sunshine (as it does every single year without fail!). Eight Speedsters, including a Covin and a Pilgrim, as well as the usual Chesils (remember them?), a 550 Spyder and a 718 RSK made for a great display in the stunning scenery of Lord Camoy's estate in the Oxfordshire countryside. The ice lolly and cold drinks vendors had a field day, although a number of our members were to be seen soon after 8.30 am tucking into bacon rolls and German bratwurst. Despite the huge number of great aircooled vehicles on show, the sight of the day was definitely Messrs Raynsford and Bennett (showing off a fine pair of knees, not to mention blue boxer shorts) examining, from a horizontal position, the finer points of the Pilgrim's rear end, oblivious to your vigilant photographer, hovering as always in readiness for the big picture. I can only think that the dynamic duo were practising for the new Olympic event, Synchronised Car Inspection. (Notice also, if you will, the colour co-ordinated red and black outfits, worth a few 9.8s from the judges, I feel sure). With the Club cars now a regular attraction at this show, it's a date (first Sunday in June) worth putting in your diary right now for next year. If the weather is half as good as this next weekend, Castle Combe will be another winner. Tony |
